Deficiency of vitamin D and Type I and Type 2 diabetes

Deficiency of Vitamin D has been associated with both Type I and Type 2 diabetes and with metabolic syndrome (a combination of high blood pressure, abnormal blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, insulin resistance and excess abdominal fat that often goes along Type 2 diabetes). It is still not understood how vitamin D helps the body regulate blood glucose – there seems to be several ways. While it does not appear that diabetes can be cured with vitamin D, as studies suggest, this vitamin can help suffers manage diabetes.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Linked to Depression

Vitamin B supplements may help people to fight depression, research suggests.   The B-complex vitamins are essential to mental and emotional well-being,  Vitamin B-12 and other B vitamins play a role in producing brain chemicals that affect mood and other brain functions. They cannot be stored in our bodies, so we depend entirely on our daily diet to supply them. B vitamins are destroyed by alcohol, refined sugars, nicotine, and caffeine so it is no surprise that many people may be deficient in these.

vitamin D can help fight bacterial infections that attack the gums which can lead to gingivitis and tooth loss.

It has been found that vitamin D can improve gum and teeth health because of its anti-inflammatory effects. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, they found that people with higher blood levels of vitamin D in their blood were experiencing less bleeding gums during gingival probing. Which would indicate that people with higher levels of vitamin D in there blood is  good for teeth and gums.

Supplement With The Right Kind of Vitamin D

Sun exposure is an easy, reliable way for most people to get their vitamin D requirements. Exposure of the hands, face, arms, and legs to sunlight two to three times a week for about one-fourth of the time it would take to develop a mild sunburn will cause the skin to produce enough vitamin D. (Exposure will vary with age, skin type, season, time of day).

Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms

Vitamin D deficiency is usually diagnosed by checking the concentrations of calcidol in one’s blood. Calcidol (also called compound 25-hydroxyvitamin D) is actually a precursor to calcitriol (the active form of vitamin D).

A question that is very often asked, is “What are the symptoms if you are vitamin d deficient?” – There are many possible effects of low vitamin D levels, below are the most important serious vitamin D deficiency symptoms:

The Sunshine Vitamin – Vitamin D3

Most of us live and work indoors and sometimes we may not see the sun for days. With the skin cancer scare and the avid use of sun block, we are not getting enough Vitamin D3 from the sun. We were meant to get a minimum of 20 minutes of sunlight in the nude daily….!!!  Also the darker your skin is, the farther away from the equator you are, and the further away you are from the summer months, the less likely it is that you will produce adequate Vitamin D levels from sun exposure alone.

How much D is enough?

Thee are two sources of vitamin D: diet and exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a prohormone produced endogenously from the action of ultraviolet light on its precursor (7-dehydrocholesterol) in the skin. Another source of Vitamin D3 is supplements.Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) does not occur naturally but is manufactured commercially and can be obtained by prescription. Both are hydroxylated in the liver to form their 25-hydroxy metabolites, the major circulating form of vitamin D in the blood. Some recent studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation with D3 more effectie than supplementation with D2. Vitamin D deficiency is linked with many chronic diseases, including autimmune diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Optimal levels of 25hydroxyvitamin D3 are 32-100ng/mL.
